Apple Valley High School has announced the retirement of Dalen Wasmund as Head Wrestling coach. Coach Wasmund replaced Jim Jackson as Head coach prior to the 2012-13 wrestling season.

Wasmund has a long history with wrestling in Minnesota. He won five straight Team State Championships as Head Coach at Apple Valley. Under Coach Wasmund, the Eagles increased their dominance by improving the State Championship total to 25 State Team Titles in 34 trips to the Championships. Wasmund was the 2017 Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year.

As a competitor, he was a two-time Minnesota State Champion at Worthington High School and finished his career with a 117-4 record. Wasmund went on to wrestle at the University of Minnesota, earning All-American honors twice. He was also a member of two World Teams and was a two-time Olympic alternate.

Dalen Wasmund has been coaching wrestling for 35 years. He began at Apple Valley High School in 1982 and was with the staff for 8 years. During that time, the team won 3 state championships and was runners-up three times. In 1990, he became the head coach at Eagan High School, where he served in that role for 10 years. Wasmund returned to Apple Valley High School in 2000 and became a varsity assistant, having the opportunity to coach his sons in both wrestling and football. He has been with the Apple Valley staff during the past 17 years, helping coach the team to 16 state championships. In 2011, Wasmund was named the National Assistant Wrestling Coach of the Year.

Dalen Wasmund is a mathematics teacher at Apple Valley High School, having taught in ISD 196 for 35 years. He currently teaches Math ccourses at Apple Valley High School. He will continue to teach. Apple Valley High School will begin searching for a new Head Wrestling Coach immediately.
